The word aesthetic comes from the Greek word ‘aisthētikos’. At the time, it was defined as ‘relating to perception by the senses’. This early form of the word was a combination of the Greek words ‘aisthēta’ meaning ‘perceptible things’, and ‘aisthesthai’ meaning ‘perceive’.

Aesthetic is used to talk about beauty or art, and people’s appreciation of beautiful things.

An example of an aesthetic is minimalism. Aesthetic means the pleasant, positive or artful appearance of a person or a thing.

An example of the word aesthetic is to say that a particular thing is beautiful, below are the images of the living room which is designed aesthetically to maintain its beauty.

We enjoy looking at and using aesthetically pleasing design because it satisfies our senses, it gives us pleasure. Designers tend to think of aesthetics as the visuals of the design. However, the aesthetic design consists of more elements than just how it looks.

Like in the above images, you can see the designer placed wall art, lamps, lights and carpet, and added colours using cushions, plants, curtains etc. So the simple-looking things, in reality, are more complex and to attain this aesthetic beauty, designers had to do more research.

What makes us to love these designs?

Simplicity: an attractive design is one that is minimalistic in nature. That is to say, you communicate your message in the simplest way possible. An attractive design does not use too many colors. It also uses a select number of fonts that are simple and for the purpose of effective communication.

Below are a few more examples

Aesthetics is a core design principle that defines a design’s pleasing qualities. In visual terms, aesthetics includes factors such as balance, colour, movement, pattern, scale, shape and visual weight. Designers use aesthetics to complement their designs’ usability, and so enhance functionality with attractive layouts.

How can we define something as aesthetic?

Something that has aesthetic appeal is very beautiful, attractive, or stylish. Something that has a certain aesthetic feature, a well-defined and well-cultivated style (e.g., a shabby chic aesthetic, goth aesthetic, or minimalist aesthetic in one’s dress, home, lifestyle, or work).
